We'd rather tell you that straight and point you to what actually works than sell you something that won't help. Here's what you need to know.

What is scabies, and why can't pest control treat it?

Scabies is a medical skin condition, not a household pest. It's caused by a tiny mite that burrows into human skin and spreads through close skin-to-skin contact between people. Because the mite lives on the body — not in your carpet, mattress or furniture — there's nothing for a pest controller to treat. The mites only survive a short time away from human skin, so the real fix comes from treating the person, not the house.

What should I actually do about scabies?

See your GP or pharmacist. Scabies is treated with prescription or pharmacist-recommended creams or medication — that's the only thing that genuinely clears it. Your doctor can confirm it's actually scabies (lots of itchy rashes look similar), advise how long it's contagious, and manage more serious cases. If you're itchy with a spreading rash, especially worse at night, don't guess — get it looked at properly.

Can cleaning my home help with scabies?

It's a useful supporting step (alongside the medical treatment, not instead of it). If someone in the house has been diagnosed, these gentle steps help avoid passing it back and forth:

Hot wash bedding, towels and recently-worn clothes (around 60°C).
Seal anything you can't wash in a bag for a few days — that's longer than the mites can survive off the body.
Vacuum mattresses, carpets and couches.
Treat everyone in close contact at the same time, so it doesn't cycle back through the household.

Is it scabies — or could it be bed bugs or bird mites?
