Possums are protected; the humane, compliant approach is to exclude them from your roof rather than relocate them, which is exactly what I do.
Is there a warranty on the proofing?
Yes — up to a two-year workmanship warranty on the proofing. Every possum proofing job comes with a two-year warranty on the proofing itself: if my proofing fails, I return and fix it at no extra charge. And if your roof is Colorbond, the warranty can extends further — I guarantee possums won't get back into your roof at all, full stop. Colorbond's sealed, predictable profile means that once the known entry points are done properly, the whole roof can be stood behind. Tile roofs are a different story: possums are known to lift tiles, and with hundreds of potential lift points across a roof, no one can honestly guarantee the entire surface — which is why tiles get the workmanship warranty rather than a blanket promise. Two years, in writing, either way.
For what it's worth: in all my possum jobs, only one tile-roof client has ever had possums beat my proofing — and it was the perfect storm. The roof itself wasn't in great shape, with fascia issues that gave them options no proofing could fully close, and there was a female possum involved, so the males went above and beyond to reach her. Determined doesn't begin to cover it. That job taught me why I warrant my workmanship on tiles rather than promising the impossible. Yes — under SA law, only pest controllers holding a permit from the Department for Environment and Heritage can legally trap possums from your roof.
How far away must a possum be released in South Australia?
SA rules require release within 50 metres of where it was found — close enough that the possum stays in its own territory and has the best chance of surviving. It's a different distance to other states, which is a common source of confusion.
Why do a humane possum removal and proofing?
Research and Australian wildlife experts have found that relocating possums has very poor survival rates, with many dying soon after release from stress, predators, vehicle strikes, or conflicts with resident possums. Because possums are highly territorial, they often cannot adapt to an unfamiliar area, making relocation an inhumane solution. Instead, the most humane approach is to safely encourage the possum to leave on its own, then professionally proof and seal entry points so it cannot return. This allows the possum to remain within its familiar territory while giving you a long-term, legal solution to keep your home possum-free.
