I've seen figs and mandarins stripped over and over, and roof rats will hollow out an orange and leave the empty skin hanging on the branch. Under pressure they'll go at almost anything sweet. What I don't see much of is lemons and limes — too sour, and not enough sugar, they want the sugar from sweet fruits.​Here's the thing though: taking the tree out doesn't fix it. University of Arizona researchers looked at this and found roof rat numbers aren't tied to the availability of food plants, because rats eat seeds, leaves, bark and roots too, and forage well past your fence into bins, dumpsters and the neighbour's yard. Fell your fig and they eat next door's, then come home to the same warm roof.

You can, and for mice it works partially. The problem is that over time they also learn to avoid not only the trap but the bait as well. With rats there’s a specific risk worth knowing. A weak trap that catches a rat without killing it creates an animal that will never go near a trap again — and that caution spreads through the colony. Once a few rats become trap-shy, the whole job becomes much harder.If you’re going to have a go, use a proper heavy-duty trap, wear gloves when you handle it, and leave it baited but unset for several days before you arm it. That gives them time to get comfortable with the trap before it becomes a threat.If you’d rather not gamble the job on it, that’s what I’m here for.On top of those issues, one main problem is about numbers. I’ve had clients who trapped rodents in large quantities and ended up carrying the burden of killing them. A few got genuinely traumatised by the experience and called me later.
