Why Prevention Beats Extermination: How Rats Really Think

I was at a few of them last Friday. Older houses, backing onto parks, creeks and woodland, exactly the kind of high-pressure properties rodents treat as prime real estate. And there was nothing. No droppings, no rub marks, no gnawing, no runways. They just weren't coming around.
It got me rethinking the actual mechanism behind prevention — why it works as well as it does. So here's what's going on inside the walls, based on what the science says and what I see in the field every week.
What is neophobia in rats — and why does it matter?
Rats are neophobic: instinctively wary of anything new or changed in their established territory. It's one of the big reasons trapping and even baiting so often fail to eradicate them. A brand-new bait station can sit completely ignored for days while the rats decide whether to trust it.

Their whole movement pattern runs on thigmotaxis — hugging the walls and edges they already know — along fixed runways marked with their own scent and greasy rub trails. They're creatures of deep habit, operating on a mental map of safe paths, reliable shelter (what we call harbourage), and dependable food and water. A rat doesn't wander; it commutes along routes it trusts.
That habit-bound, change-averse nature is the key to everything that follows.
Why do rats avoid some homes completely?
Prevention works by attacking that map.
When you seal entry points, cut off harbourage, and proof the food and water sources — removing what we call the conducive conditions — the familiar territory stops being familiar. The runways dead-end. The reliable calories disappear. The safe shelter is gone.
For a neophobic animal that depends on certainty and routine, that's enough. It hesitates, finds its trusted paths broken, and reroutes to an easier target — often the property next door that hasn't been proofed. The home hasn't been turned into a battlefield. It's quietly dropped off the rat's map altogether.
This is the difference between prevention and just baiting. We're not trying to win a fight inside your roof. We're making sure the fight never starts.
Why the rat walks straight past your brand new trap
You bought the trap. Good peanut butter. Set it exactly where you've been hearing the noise.
Three nights later: nothing. Not even a nibble. Meanwhile something is still running laps above your bedroom at 2am.
You don't have a genius rat. You have a completely normal one.
Rats are neophobic — they're afraid of new things. A rat that's been living in your roof for a month knows that space better than you do. Every beam, every box, every gap. And the moment something appears in it that wasn't there yesterday, the rat's answer is simple: not today.
Not because it knows what a trap is. Because it knows what your roof is supposed to look like, and your trap isn't in the picture.
The detail that changed how I work
Here's where it gets interesting, and I'll admit this one genuinely improved my results.
Researchers tested what actually sets rats off. Turns out it's not new objects in general. Swap something familiar for something brand new — same spot — and the rats walk past it like nothing happened. But put a new object where there was nothing at all, and suddenly they won't go near that corner for days.
It's not the object. It's the empty space that stopped being empty.
So now I don't put stations out in the open where there's nothing, when I can. I tuck them in against what's already there — the stored boxes, the old paint tins, the clutter in the corner your roof has had for fifteen years. Same station, same bait, a fraction of the suspicion. This also works doubling on pet and child safe, making it unreachable for them.

The myth about the "taster rat"
You may have heard this one — I certainly have, plenty of times, usually from someone very confident:
The big rats force the sick or weak ones to eat the new food first, then watch to see if they drop dead. If the little bloke survives, everyone tucks in.
It's a brilliant story. It's also not true.
But — and this is the good bit — what actually happens is arguably stranger.
Rats really do use each other to decide what's safe. But there's no bullying and no watching. When one rat eats something new, the smell of that food lingers on its breath and whiskers. When it meets another rat, that second rat picks up the scent and forms a preference for the same food. No conversation, no coercion. Just: someone I know has eaten this, and here they are.
We know it isn't surveillance because of one very tidy experiment: rats formed the preference from an unconscious demonstrator dusted with food odour. Nothing to watch. Nothing to learn from. The preference formed anyway.
And it goes further than the myth even claims. Rats that had been made ill by a food — the strongest possible reason to never touch it again — went back to eating it after meeting a rat that had eaten it safely. The word of a mate beat their own bad experience.
So the colony really does make decisions together. It's just that the mechanism is a smell on someone's breath, not a hierarchy sending the little bloke in first.
And I'll be honest with you: I used to tell people the taster story myself, I was just passing on on what I've heard before like most things in this trade — from my mentor who'd heard it from his. It sounded right, so I repeated it. Then I decided look for the actual research, and it turned out the truth was more useful than the myth. Not just more interesting — genuinely more useful, because it changed my approach. As a result, my clients have been getting better results ever since.

What that means for your roof
Two practical things fall out of it.
Patience compounds. When the first rat feeds without anything bad happening, it doesn't just solve him. It walks off carrying a recommendation for everyone it bumps into. That's why rushing a rat job is such a waste.
Mess is your friend. Rats prefer food near their own colony's scent — droppings, runs, nesting material. Clients sometimes instinctively clean up before the treatment. So if you reaching out, PLEASE don't cleanup, it will make me look better.
Not every rat is the same rat
Ever noticed a job that starts brilliantly and then just... stops? Two caught in the first two nights, then a week of nothing while you can still hear something up there? That's not the treatment failing. That's their family.
A team at the University of Tokyo found that wild rats aren't all cautious. Some are genuinely neophobic. Some are completely indifferent to new objects and will wander up to anything. They even traced the difference to brain chemistry — serotonin damping down avoidance, dopamine driving the bold ones forward.
So they discovered that the bold ones go first. The careful ones — very often the mature females, who are far and away the hardest to catch. Anyone who tells you the job's finished after the first good night hasn't met the rest of the household. Also bypassed rats can smell the nest and can come by for a visit, they might thing it is a good spot for them as well.
Why some roofs go faster than others
A team studied wild rats in the field rather than a lab, and found that rats living in a constantly-changing environment barely showed food neophobia at all. Made sense once they explained it: if things change around you every day, nothing is really new. Novelty stops meaning anything.
Which is why a quiet, undisturbed roof void where nothing has moved since the eighties gives me a slow, cautious, deeply suspicious rat — and a busy, cluttered, frequently-accessed space gives me one that'll try anything by Tuesday. Do rats really warn each other?
Sort of — and it's more interesting than the myth.
There's a social transmission layer on top of all this. Rats learn heavily from one another, largely through scent cues and by following experienced colony members rather than figuring everything out alone. A young or naive rat will copy what the established ones do and avoid what they avoid.
Conditioned taste aversion is the best-documented example. A rat that samples a new food, gets sick from it and survives will avoid that food — and similar foods — for the rest of its life. Because that wary individual carries the aversion back to the nest, the caution can ripple outward through the group. Knowledge of what's unsafe doesn't stay locked inside one animal.

So no, rats don't hold meetings or "warn" each other in words. But through scent, habit and social learning, a sense that an area or a food source isn't safe genuinely can spread across a colony.
Why does killing rats not solve the problem?
This is the part most people get wrong, and it's worth understanding.
When you simply kill the rats on a property but leave the conditions unchanged — the gaps they enter through, the food they're after, the shelter they nest in — you've created a vacancy, not a solution. The entry points still work. The food is still there. The territory still has everything a rat needs. So new rats from the surrounding area move in to fill the space, and the population rebuilds to whatever level the environment can support.
Extermination treats the symptom. Prevention lowers the carrying capacity of the property itself — fewer ways in, less food, less shelter — so the home simply can't support a rat population in the first place. One approach you repeat forever; the other actually changes the outcome.
So why are the prevention homes the quiet ones during a surge?
That's the question I keep coming back to. In the middle of a city-wide rodent surge, why are these the houses with nothing?
My working answer: it's not that we're catching or killing more rats than anyone else. It's that prevention has made these homes fall off the map entirely — broken runways, sealed entries, no easy food or shelter, and a neophobic animal's natural reluctance to push into changed, unfamiliar territory.
The more I understand how rats actually think, the better I get at keeping them out. And a rat-free house in the middle of a surge? That's becoming the rule, not the exception.

And this is the honest case for prevention
All of this is why I am proactive on proofing up and sealing rather than just baiting.
Baiting has to defeat a survival instinct that's been sharpened over thousands of years by everything that ever tried to eat a rat. It works — I do it every week — but it works on the rat's timetable, not yours. A proper sealed gap doesn't have to persuade anyone of anything. It just doesn't let them in.
